Materials suitable for electrochemical sensors and biosensors

Gwent Electronic Materials Ltd (GEM) has been developing the diagnostic sensor business since 1995; our first product in this market was a reference electrode material for a disposable blood glucose sensor. Since then we have developed a family of associated products that we have supplied to various diagnostic companies throughout the world.
Our sister company Applied Enzyme Technology (AET) has core expertise in protein stabilisation. Our patented technology has resulted in the successful stabilisation of many enzymes, spanning a wide variety of applications.

The synergy between the two companies gives us the unique position to offer a ‘1 stop shop’ for the development and production of Electrochemical Sensors and Biosensors.

The Gwent Group has the ability and the production equipment to manufacture pastes, screen print, dry and fire on a small and large scale. The main application method for manufacturing non-biological base transducers is screen-printing; however, materials can be supplied that are suitable for flexographic or gravure printing. We offer the service of printing circuits, electro ceramic sensors and electrochemical sensors and biosensors. Screen Printing Pastes: Please browse through our range of materials listed below or have a look at a non exhaustive overview of Electrochemical Materials. Working Electrode Materials: This range of products gives superior electrochemical performance and a low co-efficient of variation. We offer a wide range of metallised, non-metallised and mediator modified carbon graphite pastes for different electrochemical applications. We also provide a range of metallic inks including low and high temperature curing materials.

Counter Electrode Materials: This is a range of highly conductive materials including Carbon, Silver/Silver Chloride, Silver polymer and high temperature Silver/Silver Chloride.

 Reference Electrode Materials: All of our reference electrode materials are based on Silver/Silver Chloride. These are supplied in various ratios to meet specific customer’s needs for response and conductivity.

Passivation /Insulation materials: These can be used to define the working electrode area or to isolate a sensitive part of the circuit and minimise the pin-holing effect

Substrates: In order to maintain the print registration we are screen printing onto substrates in sheet form only. The substrate thickness can vary between 0.1mm to 1mm and the substrate size can vary between 83X83mm up to 330x335mm. The substrate materials we use are: 96% or 98% Alumina laser scribed for custom design, Polyester, Valox FR1, PVC, Polyimide, FR4 board or other customer specified substrates.

Bio-molecule or reagent deposition: Reagent or bio-molecule deposition can be done via screen printing or drop coating. AET has the extensive expertise in depositing stabilised enzymes on to sensor surface. Suitable bio-molecules can be found in AET’s range of products.
